Memorial information

Description

Recruits for the 2/12th Battalion were mainly drawn from Tasmania and North Queensland and sailed for the Middle East in May 1940 as part of the 18th Brigade of the 6th Division.  The brigade was diverted to the UK and transferred to the new 9th Division.

Later, the 2/12th deployed to the Middle East and saw action at Tobruk and in Syria, before being reassigned to the 7th Division and returning to Australia for the Pacific campaign.  The battalion served at Milne Bay, Goodenough Island, Buna and Sanananda, then later Shaggy Ridge and Ramu Valley.

Its last operation was in Borneo in 1945.
