Description
The 49th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force (AIF), was raised on 27 February 1916 and comprised both Gallipoli veterans from the 9th Battalion (mostly volunteers raised in Queensland) and new recruits from Australia. It was attached to the 13th Brigade and the 4th Division.
When the 49th was disbanded on 9 May 1919, it had lost 769 men killed and 1,419 men wounded.
