Brisbane Gallipoli Memorial

The 'new' Brisbane Gallipoli Memorial replaces the original 'Gallipoli Fountain' that stood on Roma Street, adjacent to the current Transit Centre. The new memorial encompasses various commemorative elements, which are supported by a central wall. The site is dedicated to the individuals who fought and died during the conflict in the Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey, April 1915.

The memorial has a stylised beach which represents Anzac Cove and the wall represents the impenitrable barrier that confronted the attacking forces on the day of the landing. The memorial also has a 'geographic' symbolism, with the bust of Kemal Ataturk, the Father of modern Turkey, with his famous speach from 1934, being located in a similar position to the actual location on land.

There is a dedication stone and plaque to the right of the main wall, indicating the existence of the 'original' Gallipoli Fountain in Roma Street and the use of some of the original elements, including the stones taken from the original beach. The new memorial was dedicated on 4 November 2008, by the State Premier.
