Description

The Milne Bay and WWII Memorial Wall was dedicated on 16 September 2007. The commemorative site consists of a memorial wall, displaying bronze unit and other plaques, surrounding a memorial sculpture in the form of a replica 'Coconut Palm stump' which served as the original memorial at No.3 Airstrip, Milne Bay. Milne Bay was the site of the first victory over the Japanese on land in WWII. Many Brisbane, Toowoomba and North Queensland Militia and AIF service personnel took part in this defeat of the enemy forces. They were supported by the Kittyhawk Squadrons of the RAAF. Corporal John French of Crows Nest, 2/9 Battalion, AIF was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions on the 4 September 1942.
