Atomic legacy: 80 years since Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Join us at Anzac Square Memorial Galleries for a free talk exploring the impact and legacy of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki ahead of their 80th anniversary.

This August marks the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the first uses of nuclear weapons in warfare that resulted in the deaths of up to 220,000 people and a lifetime of suffering for many hibakusha (atomic bomb survivors). 

In the week of this important anniversary, this free talk will feature:

• An overview of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki against the historical backdrop of the War in the Pacific.
• Harrowing personal stories of survivors of the bombings.
• The role of the British Commonwealth Occupation Forces (BCOF) in the post-war occupation of Japan, including images of Hiroshima from Australian soldiers' collections.
• Memorials in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, their significance, and the differing narratives that dominated Hiroshima and Nagasaki's recovery.

After the talk, visitors can stay to explore the Memorial Galleries, embarking on an interactive journey from the First World War to today, before taking time to reflect on the remarkable stories of bravery and sacrifice in the tranquil parklands.
